When I first started learning about crystals, I struggled to understand the whole concept, beginning with how you could choose one crystal for a particular intention in the first place. Why was one stone associated with calmness while another was associated with confidence, protection or abundance? Even more difficult for me was the idea of energy itself: how could a stone carry energy, interact with our energy or absorb something from the people and surroundings around it?
I come from a science background and grew up in a family where we were encouraged to look for facts and evidence rather than simply accept beliefs, so naturally, I had a lot of questions. When I couldn’t find experimental evidence for many of the claims surrounding crystals, I even wondered whether some of these practices had simply grown around an industry that depended on people believing in them. Still, instead of dismissing the subject completely, I slowly started working with crystals myself, and some of my own experiences made me more open to exploring what I had previously found difficult to understand.
Just as I was beginning to make some sense of crystal energy, however, I encountered another layer altogether:
Cleansing, Chargingand Energizing.
If understanding how crystals and their energies worked was difficult, the idea that those energies could also be cleansed, refreshed and intentionally charged felt like a whole new game, and once again, I found myself questioning how any of it could possibly work.
If a crystal had absorbed energy, where was that energy? I couldn’t see it. How could I possibly know whether it had been removed? And after charging a crystal, how would I know that something had changed?
I started cleansing and charging my crystals mainly because my spiritual guide Sandeshji suggested it. And, to my surprise, after cleansing my crystals twice around the full moon and regularly charging them with intention, I noticed a surprisingly big difference in my own experience with them.
After cleansing, the crystals seemed to feel lighter to me. And after charging them with intention, they seemed to carry a refreshed energy that I still find difficult to explain in words.
I don’t present my experience as scientific proof. It is simply what I personally noticed after working with my crystals. And it made me curious enough to understand something I had previously dismissed:
What exactly are we doing when we cleanse crystals and charge or energize them? And are these actually three different things?
Let’s make it simple.
Cleansing vs Charging vs Energizing Crystals: The Simple Difference
These words are sometimes used interchangeably in crystal communities, and different spiritual traditions may describe the practices slightly differently. But there is a useful way to understand them:
Practice
Purpose
Easy Way to Remember
Cleansing
Clearing accumulated or unwanted energy
Clear
Charging
Refreshing or replenishing the crystal’s energy
Recharge
Energizing
Preparing the crystal with a particular intention or purpose
Direct
In other words, Cleansing clears. Charging refreshes. Energizing directs. Once I understood this distinction, crystal care started making much more sense to me.
What Does Cleansing a Crystal Mean?
In crystal practices, cleansing is based on the belief that crystals interact energetically with the people, places and environments around them. A crystal may pass through many hands before it reaches you. It may be mined, sorted, transported, cut, polished, drilled, made into jewellery, photographed, packed and handled several times along the way. If you regularly wear a crystal bracelet, it also spends hours in contact with you and accompanies you through different places, people and emotional situations.
Energetic cleansing is therefore intended to clear accumulated influences and bring the crystal back to a more neutral state before you continue working with it. Some people cleanse their crystals:
when they first receive them
after another person has handled them
after wearing them through an emotionally intense period
after traveling
after using them regularly for some time
before giving them to another person
whenever the crystal simply feels energetically heavy or dull
That last point used to sound particularly strange to me. Now it is actually the difference I notice most. I cannot physically show you what has changed after cleansing, but in my own experience, my crystals often feel lighter afterwards.
Common Ways to Cleanse Crystals
There is no single cleansing method followed by everyone. Different crystal practitioners and spiritual traditions use different methods, and you can eventually develop a practice that feels comfortable to you.
1. Moonlight
Moonlight is one of the gentlest and most popular methods to cleanse crystals. You can place your crystals near a window or in a protected outdoor area overnight. This is one of the methods I personally use. because it has traditionally been associated with release, renewal and energetic clearing, although you do not necessarily have to wait for a full moon every time you want to cleanse your crystals.
I particularly like combining moonlight with intention rather than simply leaving the crystals outside and forgetting about them.
2. Sound
Sound from singing bowls, bells, chanting or mantras may also be used to cleanse crystals. This can be especially convenient if you have several crystals or crystal products that you want to cleanse together.
3. Incense or Dhoop
Some people gently pass their crystals through incense or dhoop smoke while holding the intention of clearing accumulated energy.
Keep the crystal away from the flame and excessive heat.
4. Selenite
Selenite plates, bowls and slabs are commonly used in crystal practices for cleansing other crystals. A bracelet, tumble stone or other small crystal can simply be placed on the selenite for a period of time or overnight.
5. Water
Water is another traditional cleansing method, but this one requires caution. Not every crystal should be placed in water. Some minerals are soft, porous, soluble or contain components that may deteriorate when repeatedly exposed to moisture.Selenite, for example, should not be soaked in water. Pyrite and some iron-containing stones also require care.
If you don’t know whether your crystal is water-safe, choose a gentler method such as moonlight, sound or intention instead.

What Does Charging a Crystal Mean?
This is where things get confusing because cleansing and charging are frequently spoken about as though they are the same thing. I find it easier to separate their purposes.
Cleansing is about clearing. Charging is about replenishing.
Think about clearing a room. You open the windows, remove the clutter and create a fresh space. That’s cleansing.
Now imagine bringing fresh flowers into that room, opening the curtains and letting fresh air and light enter. That’s closer to charging.
Within crystal practices, charging is intended to refresh the crystal’s energetic qualities and prepare it to be worked with again. Common charging practices include:
moonlight
suitable sunlight
selenite
crystal clusters
meditation
sound
mantra
focused intention
This is also why the boundary between cleansing and charging isn’t always perfectly clear. For example, some people consider moonlight both a cleansing and charging practice. Someone may place a crystal under the full moon with the intention of releasing accumulated energy while simultaneously refreshing it.
For me, intention has become an important part of charging. After cleansing, I spend some time reconnecting with what I am actually working with the crystal for. And that has made charging feel much less like a ritual I am supposed to perform and much more like consciously reconnecting with my crystal.
What Does Energizing a Crystal Mean?
Energizing is about purpose. After a crystal has been cleansed and refreshed, energizing involves intentionally preparing it for the person or purpose it is going to be used for. Depending on the spiritual tradition or practitioner, this might involve:
setting an intention
sankalp
prayer
mantra
meditation
puja
Reiki or another energy practice
placing a written intention with the crystal
This is why I don’t see energizing as simply another word for charging. Charging is about refreshing the crystal. Energizing gives that preparation direction.
For example, two people may own identical Green Aventurine bracelets. One person may be working towards growing a new business, while another may be hoping to become more open to opportunities in their career. The crystal is the same, but their intentions are not. That individual intention becomes an important part of energizing.
Understanding Sankalp Or Intention
In Indian spiritual traditions, sankalp can be understood as a consciously held intention or resolve. An intention might be something broad such as:
“May I remain open to positive opportunities.”
Or it could be connected to something more personal that someone is currently working towards.
The important part is the clarity behind it. Rather than asking a crystal to somehow solve everything in your life, intention gives you a direction for how you want to work with it. This is also why I prefer intentions that focus on what we want to cultivate rather than what we fear.

Do You Need to Cleanse, Charge and Energize Your Crystals Every Time?
This is something I wish more beginner crystal guides explained. You don’t have to perform an elaborate ritual every time you wear your bracelet. Your crystal practice should help you feel more connected and intentional, not anxious about whether you’ve accidentally broken some invisible rule. You might cleanse a crystal when you’ve been using it heavily, after a particularly intense period, when many people have handled it or simply when it begins to feel different to you.
Charging can follow cleansing when you want to refresh and reconnect with the crystal. Energizing becomes particularly useful when you first begin working with a crystal or when you consciously want to give your practice a new direction. There isn’t one timetable that everyone needs to follow.
How Often Should You Cleanse and Charge Crystals?
Some people cleanse their crystals weekly, while others do it monthly. Some prefer to cleanse them during the full moon, and others simply do so when they intuitively feel that the time is right. I personally like cleansing my crystals during the full moon.
After trying cleansing around the full moon twice, I began noticing that my crystals felt different afterwards. That experience made the ritual meaningful to me rather than something I was doing simply because someone had told me to.
If you’re new to crystals, you don’t need to decide on a complicated schedule.
Start simply. Pay attention to how frequently you use the crystal, where you take it, how often other people handle it and how it feels to you over time. Your practice can develop naturally from there.
Can You Cleanse, Charge and Energize Crystals Yourself?
You do not need someone else to create an intention for your crystal. One of the simplest practices is to cleanse your crystal using a method that is safe for that particular stone, then sit somewhere quiet and hold it comfortably in your hand. Take a few slow breaths and think about why you chose this crystal in the first place. What are you hoping to cultivate? Perhaps it is clarity, confidence, calmness, protection, abundance or emotional balance.
Once your intention feels clear, you can say it aloud, repeat it silently or write it down. Spend a few quiet minutes with the crystal and then begin using or wearing it. If you follow a particular spiritual tradition, you may choose to include prayer, mantra, meditation, puja or another practice that already feels meaningful to you.
There is no need to copy someone else’s elaborate ritual simply because it looks impressive online.
How We Cleanse and Energize Crystals at Mesmera World?
Our process at Mesmera World has gradually developed through what Sandeshji has taught me and through my own experience of working with crystals.
We use moonlight and intention as part of our cleansing practice.
But there is another reason why the final energizing happens closer to dispatch. A crystal doesn’t arrive at our workspace and remain untouched until someone orders it. It may be checked, sorted, photographed, used while preparing a bracelet, inspected again and handled during packing. Several people may come into contact with it before it finally reaches the person who ordered it. For that reason, we prefer to do the final energising after an order has been placed and before the crystal product is dispatched, rather than energizing a large quantity of inventory months in advance.
Our Pre-Dispatch Energizing Process
We at Mesmera World follow a simple process rather than an elaborate ceremony. A short customized puja is performed using haldi and kumkum, after which the crystal or crystal product is placed on a selenite plate. Underneath the selenite plate, we place the intention. If a customer has shared a particular intention with us, we use that intention during the energizing process.
If they haven’t, we can use a broader intention centered around their own positive intentions being fulfilled. The crystal is then left on the selenite plate overnight before being prepared for dispatch. And because this happens after the order is placed, the final energizing is connected to an actual person rather than a piece of inventory waiting on a shelf.
What to Do When Your Energized Crystal Arrives
If you receive a crystal that has already been cleansed and energized, you don’t need to immediately start the whole process again. You can simply spend a little time connecting with it by holding it, looking at it, and wearing it for a while.
If you have a personal intention, repeat that intention while holding the crystal. You can absolutely add your own intention even if someone else has already energized it for you. In fact, I think that personal connection matters. Over time, you can develop your own cleansing and charging routine based on how you use the crystal.
Crystal Cleansing and Charging Safety: Don’t Damage the Crystal While Caring for Its Energy
This is one part of crystal care where the physical properties of the stone matter just as much as spiritual practice.
Not every cleansing method is suitable for every crystal.
Before using water, salt, sunlight or any other physical method, check the mineral and the materials used in your jewellery. Some stones are water-sensitive. Others may fade after prolonged exposure to sunlight. Crystal bracelets also contain elastic, thread, metal components or adhesives that may react differently from the stone itself. A few simple rules can prevent unnecessary damage:
Don’t assume every crystal can be submerged in water.
Avoid soaking crystal jewellery unless you know all its materials are water-safe.
Don’t leave every crystal in strong direct sunlight for hours.
Keep crystals away from open flames when using incense or dhoop.
Handle soft and fragile stones gently.
If you’re uncertain, choose a non-contact method such as sound, intention or gentle moonlight.
Amethyst and Rose Quartz, for example, can fade with prolonged strong sunlight, while Selenite is particularly sensitive to water. The safest ritual is one that respects both the energetic practice and the actual mineral in your hand.
Common Mistakes Beginners Make With Crystal Cleansing and Charging
Don’t make the ritual too complicated. You don’t need six ingredients, three candles, a particular playlist and perfect moonlight at precisely 11:47 PM. Start with something simple and meaningful.
Don’t assume every crystal can be cleansed the same way. A method that is physically safe for Clear Quartz may not be suitable for Selenite, Pyrite or another more sensitive mineral, so always check before choosing a cleansing method.
Be careful with prolonged sunlight. Sunlight is sometimes used for charging, but prolonged exposure can fade certain stones. Moonlight can be a gentler option when you’re uncertain.
Don’t worry too much if someone touches your crystal. Your crystal doesn’t suddenly become unusable because someone picked it up. If another person handling it bothers you energetically, you can simply cleanse it again.
Understand why you’re performing the ritual. This was essentially what I did at the beginning: I cleansed my crystals because I had been told to cleanse them. Once I understood the difference between clearing, refreshing and intentionally directing, these practices became much more meaningful to me.
What if I don’t feel anything after cleansing or charging my crystal?
That’s completely okay. Not everyone experiences crystals in the same way. Some people describe noticeable sensations, while others experience their crystal practice much more subtly. You don’t need to manufacture a feeling because someone told you that you should experience one. Give yourself time to observe your own experience.
Can I change the intention I originally set for a crystal?
Yes. Your intentions and circumstances can change.
If a crystal has been associated with one particular intention for a long time and you now want to work with it differently, you may choose to cleanse it first and then set your new intention. Think of it as beginning a fresh chapter with the same crystal.
Do I have to say my intention aloud?
An intention can be spoken aloud, repeated silently, used during meditation or written down.
At Mesmera World, written intention is actually part of the energizing process we follow. The clarity and meaning of the intention matter more than whether someone else can hear you saying it.
What if I don’t want to tell anyone my personal intention?
You don’t have to. Some intentions are deeply personal. If someone else is energizing a crystal for you, a broader intention can be used without requiring you to share private details. You can then set your more personal intention yourself once the crystal reaches you.
Can someone else energize a crystal for me?
Yes, many spiritual traditions include practitioners preparing, blessing or energizing objects for other people.
But that doesn’t prevent you from developing your own relationship with the crystal afterwards. You can still hold it, meditate with it, set your own intention and incorporate it into your own spiritual practice.
Will cleansing remove the intention I previously set?
Different crystal traditions interpret this differently.
If you are cleansing specifically with the intention of completely resetting the crystal, you may prefer to set your intention again afterwards. If you’re simply doing your regular energetic cleansing, you can also take the opportunity to reconnect with your original intention. There is no need to worry that you’ve somehow “ruined” your crystal by doing the process imperfectly.
Can I use one crystal for more than one intention?
You can, but keeping the intention relatively clear may make your practice feel more focused.
For example, Green Aventurine might be part of your practice around opportunity, prosperity and personal growth because those intentions naturally complement one another. Trying to attach ten completely unrelated goals to one crystal can make the ritual feel less intentional and more like a spiritual shopping list.
And finally…
My relationship with crystal cleansing and charging didn’t begin with belief; it began with doubt. Even after I had started working with crystals, I couldn’t understand how anyone could know whether invisible accumulated energy had actually been removed, so I tried the practice without expecting very much from it.
My own experience surprised me. After cleansing my crystals around the full moon, they seemed lighter to me, and after regularly charging them with intention, they seemed refreshed in a way I still can’t properly describe. I don’t have a scientific explanation for that experience, and I don’t think I need to invent one. One of the things working with crystals has taught me is that I can remain curious without pretending to have every answer.
If you’re skeptical about cleansing or charging, you don’t have to force yourself to believe either. Try a simple practice if you feel drawn to it, pay attention, notice whether anything changes for you, and then decide what deserves a place in your crystal practice.
If you remember nothing else from this guide, remember these three words:
Crystal cleansing, charging and energizing are spiritual and traditional practices. Experiences with crystals are personal and may vary from person to person. Crystals and spiritual practices should be used as complementary practices and are not substitutes for medical, psychological, financial, legal or other professional advice.

Cleansing clears. Charging refreshes. Energizing directs.
Sometimes understanding why we’re doing something makes the ritual far more meaningful than simply following instructions because someone told us to.
